Planning for the future by bringing in today’s top talent continues to be the goal of not only L.M. Kohn, but also of our reps. Over the past few months, we’ve introduced several promising new additions to the L.M. Kohn home office. But today, we’d like to introduce a new member of our rep, Pilot Wealth Management’s team, Dylan Furlong.
Born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI, Dylan’s interest in personal finance began during a high school macroeconomics course he took his junior year. This interest sparked action, as he and a group of friends began looking into cryptocurrency and learning how they could make money work for them. Before his high school graduation, Dylan was a member of the DECA business club, preparing himself for his future success in business by creating practice investment portfolios and investing hypothetical funds in Apple and Nike.
By the time Dylan entered college, there was no question that he wanted to pursue a career in personal finance. However, at this point, he figured he was more cut out for a role in sales instead of financial planning. He knew he was good at numbers and enjoyed presenting information to people and communicating with them, but didn’t want to be stuck behind a computer screen all day.
Upon graduation, Dylan’s parents urged him to contact their acquaintance Chris Rueger, founder and president of Pilot Wealth Management, for a job. Simply looking to gain experience in a sales role, he agreed. While he had learned about financial planning throughout college, Dylan admits that he didn’t fully understand the career until he spoke with Chris.
Chris shared with Dylan how the majority of the financial planning industry was aging along with its client base, and how he needed someone to help him create better relationships with his clients’ children and grandchildren. This person had to be adept at analyzing the market, but also capable of speaking to and attracting the business of young working professionals.
“Chris shared his business practices with me, and explained how it’s different than the bigger firms,” said Dylan. “Pilot works with clients to build a customized financial plan, with no one-size-fits-all packaged solutions. Being able to build something so unique to each client was very interesting to me. Everything Chris was telling me about his business was exactly what I was looking for.”
Dylan accepted a position as head of marketing at Pilot Wealth Management in November 2022. Since then, he’s earned his Series 7, Series 66 and SIE certifications, and matriculated to the role of financial advisor. He plans on obtaining either a CFA or CFP certification in the near future.
In his current role, Dylan markets to the younger generation of clients using social media and short form content to educate them about what they should be doing to plan for the future, and how Pilot Wealth Management can help them. He works with younger clients to develop a step-by-step plan of how to begin saving for retirement, balancing a budget for the lifestyle they live now while also allowing them to begin stuffing money away for a later date.
In his spare time, Dylan volunteers as assistant coach for the men’s varsity soccer program at his local high school, and with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor.
